Medical Checklist

Virtually all insurance companies require that you be examined before a policy can be issued. This exam typically consists of a blood test, urine specimen, blood pressure reading, and a series of health questions. In some cases, an electrocardiogram (EKG), or other additional tests may be required.

The exam will be performed by a paramedic, nurse, or a doctor. It will usually take place in your home or office, and is performed at the expense of the insurance company. To save time during your exam, it is a good idea to have the names and phone numbers of any doctors you have consulted, as well as the dates, and reasons for consultation.

By preparing for your insurance exam, you can help to avoid unnecessary abnormal exam results, which may adversely affect your rates. This is one important way to save yourself money. In order to achieve the best results on your medical examination, we suggest the following:

1. Avoid any caffeinated beverages for 24 hours prior to your exam. (Decaffeinated is OK)

2. Do not use any tobacco products for at least 3 hours prior to your exam.

3. Schedule your exam for a time when you are under the least amount of pressure and completely rested. For most people this means in the morning. If at all possible, do not have breakfast before the exam.

4. Do not drink alcohol for at least 36 hours before your exam.

5. Salt consumption should be minimized for 3-4 days before the exam to avoid an adverse blood pressure reading. Plan your food intake for several days prior to your exam. Avoid rich foods and those with large amounts of sugar.

6. Be ready for the exam a few minutes early - a short period of relaxation does wonders to relieve any tension and lower blood pressure.

7. Be ready with a list of your doctors, including the accurate spelling, phone numbers, addresses and treatment dates.

8. You should plan on spending 30 minutes for a full exam, plus an additional 30 minutes if chest x-rays and EKGs are included.

9. Try to avoid strenuous exercise 24 hours before the exam. Strenuous exercise often causes abnormal lab readings.

10. Get a good night's sleep! Proper preparation can save time and money for you
